 "DON'T CALL THESE CHEAP!!!!" 2009-09-04
By B. Kim (DB, CA)
I bought these theater set as a skeptic. I'm pretty strict about how my audio sounds, especially having owned a $5000 system before along with some THX Certified equipment. I am also a Sound Engineer. The need for a system arose for my HD television to watch my world series and didn't want to spend too much money.

The unit is identical to SONY Blu Ray Players so if you have one of those, it's a hand-and-glove fit in design. The speakers reproduce an amazing sound with a little bit of tweaking. Auto calibration did not work for me but probably because I used a different (longer) cable for my surround speakers. The vocals were a little low which was easy to fix by increasing the CENTER channel level. The bass was a bit low but after increasing its level individually, it was fine. this is a necessary step for this setup since the bass amp is passive. yes, passive, but do not worry! it is plenty amplified by the unit.

SOUNDS amazing!!! it can't be beat for the price. It does not have the room-filling wave patterns of BOSE systems but the frequency response and performance comes REAL close. NO REALLY IT DOES! The only areas it lacks (slightly) is punchiness and midrange. The size of the speakers are also quite small. Looking at the Center Channel made me worry but for its design, it really outperforms. The amount of wattage is also outstanding for the price. Keep in mind, "FOR THE PRICE." The fact is there are plenty of better sounding equipment out there. But I am here to say, you will not find anything better for this price range... and you will be hardpressed to find one at 500-1000 dollar range as well. It's just that good in performance and value (3 HDMI!!!)

It would be unfair to give such a positive review without any downside... especially when there are some. The price does reflect SOME value of what you paid for. The total volume of the entire system is 75 out of 100 satisfactory. Don't get me wrong, it is plenty loud enough to enjoy your movies in a small to medium sized living room or den, but it just won't be head-banging system. But unless you want a RAVE-level volume, you should be plenty happy with this system. Mid-range performance is real good but stellar. But that can easily be fixed by upgrading the center channel or the front speakers which STILL ends up being an unbeatable value of performance. The menu system (no on-screen menu) that is built into the unit takes some time to get used to. When playing CD, etc. it's does not automatically convert to Dolby Surround. It's strictly stereo setting. This is not a big minus but thought it was worth mentioning. But really that's only negative I have so far.

If you are getting some distortion from these speaker set, something is up with your sound setup (possibly the CD). As a sound engineer, I know that the way things are recorded, reprocessed during replay, has an effect on "clipping" or what sounds like a buzz/distortion in the output.

 "4 1/2 stars actually" 2009-09-04
By Michele S. Roda (Nevada)
The set up is easy enough with HDMI cables. Removing 1/2 a star because the menu display is too small unless you have 20/20 vision, t.v. interface would have been ideal, and for Sony's penchant for proprietary ... everything. There is no need (for us) to change the wires, but it may be for others.

We were concerned by some reviews that stated the system was not loud enough but after testing it, we have to disagree with those reviews. We live in a single family house and it can be heard without distortion from outside the house without maxing it out. (How much louder does it need to be?).

Would not consider maxing this out if living in an apartment, It would be un-neighborly and intrusive.

Room setup: open floor plan (23x16 living room) with adjacent kitchen and clear sound from both areas.

Tested a movie with a lot of action and sound effects, Journey to the Center of the Earth in blue ray, and it was exceptionally good. Clear sound from all speakers, rumbling made us feel like we were part of the movie.

Some Great features: Stadium, Concert Hall, Jazz club, etc... they all sound great. The Sports mode sounds like being at the stadium. (watched a game today).

Low profile for all components and it all works well toghether (Sony tv, 50 cd playerand BD, cable box and Wii).

Highly recommend this system for its quality and price.

 "I expected more" 2009-08-29
By O. Valdivia (San Diego)
I was expecting the "WOW" efect and sounding like a $1000 system like other reviews I have read here. The truth is that it sounds just OK, I cranked it up to MAX Volume and it felt like it was at 3/4 at most. The sound is very clean, it just needs more volume. I installed it in a small room 14 ft X 15 ft.

It looks nice, easy to install, if you are looking for a loud system dont get this one.

 "One Word: Amazing" 2009-08-21
By Drew Jolesch (Dallas, TX USA)
I spent about 2 months trying to find the best HTiB system for the money. I didn't want to spend over $500 for a system and I am not quite ready for Blu-ray so I was looking for a system with HDMI inputs (to eventually support Blu-ray) and enough features to provide the sound quality I wanted. I looked at Onkyo systems but I decided against it because I'm in college and I only need the system to last 4 years, why spend more money now? I will get a nicer system once I'm out of college.

Anyways, I settled on the Sony HT-SS2300. So far, I am amazed at the sound quality. I have watched Dark Knight and Mission Impossible: III on it, and the sound is amazing.

I have an XBOX 360 and a Cable Box connected to the A/V Reciever and the output HDMI is going to a Samsung LN46A850. I currently have a lot of remotes because of the different companies (Sony and Samsung and Scientific Atlanta) but I just bought the Harmony One and hopefully that will streamline everything.

The bass is wonderful while playing Call of Duty or NCAA on the XBOX, the crowd goes insane if you are the home team.

I would recommend this system to anyone looking for a good entry level system that is not quite sure if the want Blu-ray yet but can always add it in the future.

This sound system is amazing and it doesn't break the wallet.

 "AWESOME for the price" 2009-08-15
By S. Elrasoul (Orange Park, FL USA)
No these are no BOSE $2000 surround sound but for what you pay these are great. I just got them in and hooked up all my HDMI units (PS3, Xbox, BlueRay) and must say, WOW!!!!!!! The audio is just great and setup was very easy with the color coded tabs. I like the easy Calibration system they gave with it, made setting up the sound a bit faster. As for quality well come on it is from Sony. I know this review is short but all I am going to say is this was an awesome investment.
