As part of the second generation of Onkyo high-definition-capable receivers, the TX-SR606 is at the forefront of affordable home theater. The key is to have the most capable version of HDMI. The TX-SR606 provides high-definition video and audio processing for four source components—another first for Onkyo at this level. From Blu-ray Disc players to gaming consoles and cable/satellite boxes, you have everything in the digital realm covered. Apart from 1080p video, the TX-SR606 can upscale all video signals to 1080i, regardless of the connection, for output via HDMI. Onkyo’s own RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) also gives you inter-operability with the displays and playback components from other leading brands. And with an expanded version of Audyssey’s room correction technology, the TX-SR606 maintains the fullness of surround sound audio quality at low volume levels. The TX-SR606 offers all-round excellence rarely seen at this level.

 "Great for a while" 2009-10-27
By J. Michael Allgyer (Lancaster, PA USA)
This reciever has great features - HDMI, the new Dolby and DTS standards, 7.1 surround, loads of inputs...and the price is great. however, like too many others, mine has bit the dust as well. it started with component video input dying, then it kept taking longer and longer to negotiate the HDCP handshake for bluray. and now, it won't play blurays at all, leaving me with HD Audio downconverted to 2ch audio. it looks like onkyo may have skimped out on the circuitry in these units, as it seems they die after 9-12 months for a lot of people.

so, be warned!

"Stopped Working After 1 year" 2009-10-26
By D. Berten (Chicago Illinois)
My Onkyo story is not a pretty one.

I went all HD about 15 months ago --- new display, new Blu-Ray DVD, switched to Dish, etc. Everything that could be HMDI was, and the Onkyo receiver tied it all together.

About 9 months in, strange things started to happen. The Wii, for example, would only connect with coaxing. Fiddle with the start-up order, get sound but no picture or picture and no sound. I chalked it up to kids not handling it correctly.

The real trouble started (I thought) with the Blu-Ray. Got some weird "U.73" error, which was traced (supposedly) to a faulty HMDI cable. So I bought new HMDI cables.

But the problem persisted. So I bought a new Blu-Ray. Problem solved, or so I thought.

No, even with new HMDI cables AND a new Blu-Ray, the system still wouldn't work. And the Wii stopped altogether. Then the satellite started to get iffy.

It finally dawned on me that the problem wasn't the inputs or the cable, it was the receiver. And boy was it.

The thing just didn't work. The internal HMDI transfer was fried, at least for most components. Repeated e-mails to Onkyo got me nothing.

I gave up, bought a Denon, installed all the same components, and everything (even the Wii!!) worked right the first time.

So, if you want to buy this, be prepared to deal with mystery failures and ultimately replace it. Or you can skip that experience and just buy something else.

 "Great replacement" 2009-10-18

This unit replaced a low end receiver. I shopped for desired features and this provided a unit where I didn't have to compromise. Great sound, easy setup, fine performance.

"Nice until it breaks in a year" 2009-10-18
By B. Nash (USA)
I purchased it on Amazon excited to have 4 HDMI inputs and to listen to blu-ray sound through it. Unfortunately like others on here, the HDMI died on me after 1 year. This will be last Onkyo purchase, amazing how poor the quality is on a product to die in one year.

 "Low quality, failed twice" 2009-10-05
By John Lilley (Boulder CO)
I really want to like this receiver. It has simple setup, built-in auto-EQ, priced reasonably well, and switches four HDMI inputs. Unfortunately, I had to send it in for repair the first time I connected an HDMI source, because of "hum" on the HDMI audio. After repair it worked well until now, when all HDMI has failed. Its still under warranty, but I expected an Onkyo to be better than this.
