Purchased this product after reading other reviews on Amazon.com as well as other sites. They were not wrong. Easy to install and set up. Excellent sound but a little to much base that I have not been able to adjust with my knowlege. Also I saved over $100.00 thru Amazon.com. I would recommend this product.

You can never go wrong with a Sony product. I have 2 surround sounds, a big screen TV, a camcorder, etc. This product is tremendous for around $250. For a small to medium room, it does everything you need. The sound volume will not "blowout" a big room at maximum, though. That would be my only concern. Make sure you get an HDMI wire which is not included(I got one for $5 on EBAY) and you regular DVD's look like virtual HDTV. I cannot wait to get a IPOD to dock. Enjoy!

Someone said that you cannot use the reciever with a satellite. I have it working perfectly with DirecTV but you have to make an extra connection. Connect the HDMI cable (or whatever video cable you are using) from the reciever to the TV. Then connect an optical audio cable from the DirecTV (or whatever satellite system you are using) to the Sony reciever. You have to experiment with settings but it works.

It seems like a great product - sounds good, looks good - but I can't stop it from muting itself. Watching a movie the "muting on" will randomly pop up every 30 seconds to 2 minutes. I can hit the "mute" button on the remote to un-mute it - but it will mute itself again within the next minute or two.
I have found out that if there is no HDMI cable connected it does not happen. I can listen to my TV through the Sony HDX285 using an audio cable - but if I connect an HDMI cable it will mute itself within 10 seconds. (I've tried 2 different HDMI cables to make sure it wasn't defective).
What could be causing this to happen? I can't use this product if I can't use an HDMI cable to connect it to my TV.
UPDATE: I think I've fixed it. I found this information from the Sony support site which seems to have fixed the problem:

I would up the star rating if I could, to 4 stars, but it doesn't allow a change to the star rating...

this speaker system is really good for the price, I upgraded to this system from a logitech 5.1 set of desktop speakers, so of course going from desktop speakers to home theatre speakers you would expect much better sound, and you get it. The treble and high ranges are good, not exceptional but for $300 thats fine- however, the bass is truly exceptional- nice lows, and gives you a satisfying punch, very powerful.
one important note to those not using the iPdod dock or built in cd/dvd player: if you plug in your computer or video game console via the audio in jack, you must press system menu on the remote and change the audio mode to Pro Logic, otherwise sound will only come the from the front two speakers!
