"I over thought this purchase..." 2009-09-12
By Makelegs (flyover country)
This is a REALLY nice receiver... and I got it [...]. The funny thing is... I could not resist the Reon. Even though I use "through" setting for just about all of the video inputs. The hdmi switching is just tediously slow, otherwise, due to varying directv channel-changing resolutions. And even if I used the Reon, my plasma displays native 768p, thereby requiring reprocessing regardless of how the Reon is used. So... I can honestly say that I'm not fully benefiting from the Reon, even though it seemed so vital at the time of purchase. Maybe I'll feel different when I upgrade to a 1080p display.

The sound is very good. The sound options are plenty. But I was never shocked and amazed by the overall sound upgrade from my 9 year old receiver. I upgraded the FW, no problem. Audyssey setup is a breeze (if you can get the family to leave the house for 1-2 hours). The universal remote works great for me. I certainly recommend it as a great product. I just probably could have been as happy with the 806, or some lower model within the next generation of Onkyos. Just my 2 cents.

Overall... glad I have it, though.

 "bang for your buck" 2009-08-29
By Jeremy J. Frissell
onkyo has consistently produced exceptional quality receivers. they produce reference quality sound with loads of features at a low price. i bought this to upgrade an onkyo 601 that i have used for about 5 or 6 years now. i had always appreciated the sound it produced but it is now a bit outdated with only 6.1 surround and no hdmi in/outs. this new 876 fits the bill perfectly. amazing set up, gobs of features and loads of power. the remote layout is great and it makes multizone use a breeze and brainless. i only have two complaints. one is that it has two hdmi video outs, but they cant both be activated simultanously. moreover, you have to enter the menu screens in order to swith between them. a simple button on the remote or receiver face would have been better. i had hoped to run two hdmi out to two monitors (one in my main room and one in my kitchen). my other complaint is that when running all your gear into your receiver and out to your tv, it takes a few seconds to switch between inputs. not a big deal, but the way i had it set up before using my tv to do the switching, this was instantaneous. beyond these two minor gripes, this is an exceptional machine, that will handle any speaker combination you throw at them. if you are considering upgrading from anything other that an elite quality reciver, you will be blown away by what you have been missing.

"Excelelent Receiver for a modest price" 2009-08-21

Onkyo TX-SR876 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)This is an excellent receiver. It belongs in the elite class of A/V receivers. The unit does run hot. I cured this with the Antec A/V coolerAntec Low Profile AV Component Cooler for Media PC Home Theater Products All high powered receivers run hot so this is not a bad mark against this product. I had the Onkyo 600 before this and let me tell you, the difference was amazing. All the high, mid, and low tones were there in abundance. You simply cannot go wrong with this RX if you want excellent sound and a relative low price. Just hit the add to cart button, You will be glad you did.

"Best receiver I've ever owned." 2009-07-16
By R. Hammell
Been wanting to upgrade to something that switches multiple HDMI 1.3 sources, and supports latest audio encoding schemes. Network would've been nice to have but couldn't justify the extra cash. TX-SR876 turned out to be perfect for me. I read the manual before setting up, but on-screen setup made things pretty easy. Never had the pleasure of automated speaker calibration in my previous receivers. Audyssey gave my average 5.1 home theater new life. Video and audio performance is stellar. Rear half of the unit gets a bit warm so give it room to breath. Overall I could not be happier!

"Onkyo TX-SR876 Theater Receiver "The Hot Box"" 2009-05-02
By Mr. Fix It (Kodiak, Alaska)
It's a Great Unit with a lit learning remote. The power and sound it unleashes, I am hearing stuff on CD's and DVD's I haven't heard before. Sure it gets hot, gotta let it breath. I ordered a small super quiet 4" square 110v fan and placed it right on top & plugged it in the ac outlet on the back and every time I turn on the receiver, the fan kicks on as well. And it is not enclosed in some airtight case, it's out in the open.

With the HDMI Pass through feature makes it all the better. I got this receiver at such a super deal I'm just blown away at the retail price now. I made a great choice and a super deal even though hearing some horror stories about it. At todays price I could sell mine and make 100% profit!

Onkyo produced this unit right next to their top of the line receiver. They didn't leave much out on this receiver, almost has it all.

Goes well with Samsung 50", Infinity Alpha 50's, Infinity 37c Center Channel, Pair of Infinity 25es Back/Side, a Pair of 701 Bose make up for the sound in the rear. And with an earth shaking Sub, SVS PB12-Plus makes your guts hurt! Now that's power.
