I think that my 10 year old Polk 5.1 speakers were starting to die. More often than not, we kept asking each other "What did they say?" whether it was on TV or DVD. I looked around and from the positive reviews I bought the HK.
I was somewhat shocked by the flimsy plastic build. The Polks are made out of rugged metal.
The HK wall mounts are junk. The Polk mounts have a metal ball and joint construction.
The plastic spring wire grips are junk. Plastic deteriorates over time and will eventually break. This happened to me on some other older speakers just a few days ago. The Polk have metal screw-downs for the wires.
Mind you, the Polks were in the same price category so I'm not comparing high-end to entry-level speakers.
For build construction, I give the HK 2 stars. These are disposable speakers.
When it came to sound, the front center speaker (wow, that is tiny compared to the Polk; but is that good or bad? I don't know) seemed a bit bright - tinny? I used the Sony STR-DA5300ES receiver with the microphone to automatically balance the sound.
For a best-case test, we played a Blu-Ray 'Immortal Beloved' using a Sony STR-DA5300ES receiver (a fantastic piece of equipment -- it revitalized the Polk speakers that sounded awful with our older Onkyo receiever). Our initial impression is that the sound seemed less muddy. We could more clearly hear the dialog even with the accents.
We're not audiophiles or snobs so we weren't expecting concert hall quality but at this point, we're not delighted. We'll run it for a couple of weeks and see if we stop saying "Huh" as much or using sub-titles when watching movies. If not, we'll pay an obscene amount of money to ship it back.
I *will* keep you posted.

This is the best surround system that I have ever had. I love the bass and the clarity in the highs. The only negative I could think of would be that I wish the mids were just a little stonger. But overall, I don't think you can find a better home theatre system for less money.

Speakers sounded good, but the powered sub woofer quit working after 14 months into the 5-year warranty. Harman Kardon requires sending the unit to an approved repair shop - at my cost - for repair. I would be listening to movies and TV without base for at least a month waiting for this defective product to be repaired. Won't buy from HK, again. Sony products have a reputation for not breaking down, in the first place. Bought a Sony powered sub-woofer Sony SA-W3000 Performance Line 12" 180-Watt Subwoofer to replace this unit, which sounds excellent.

Well what is there really to say about these speakers other than there amazing, wish they would of been cheaper but nothing about that. Love them and would highly recommend.

Pros: HKTS-18 is really one good system. It sounds very clear and bass is really powerful. I use it to watch movie, listen to music, and play games. They are all sound good in this speaker.
Cons: There's one minor cons, the subwoofer will have a small explosion sounding like when you turn your amp on.
